Do you host your own domain(s)? Do you host your own email, too? If so, this might be of interest to you.

I have been long searching for a clean, efficient, functional, and pleasant open-source solution to a webmail front-end for my email. My particular hosting provider has SquirrelMail and Horde options built in. However, I have never been thrilled with either. They work (and Horde has many features), but in my opinion, they are old and not user friendly.

Recently, my provider gave its users access to SimpleScripts, which automates the install of various web solutions, such as RoundCube. I stumbled upon this and decided to do an install, not really expecting to be impressed. The install was really simple, proving the SimpleScripts approach worked great. I immediately went to the location where I installed, and logged in.

Wow, the interface was nice and clean, and very user friendly. By far the most impressive first look at such a project. They are off to a great start with this. Definitely stable for me, and works as advertised. Very nice and easy to use; an all around pleasant experience. Check out the screenshots:

RoundCube has very solid functionality (amazing for a v0.1.1), but it is not quite ready for prime time. Here are the released features, and things to come:

Released features

Multilingual capabilities

Full support for MIME and HTML messages

Compose messages with attachments

Multiple sender identities

Basic address book

Find-as-you-type address book integration

Forwarding messages with attachments

Create or remove custom message folders

Built-in caching for fast mailbox access

Support for external SMTP server

Searching messages and contacts

Spell checking

Advanced user interface

Unlimited users and messages

Complete customization with skins

Planned features

Richtext/HTML composing

Message filters and rules

Full featured address book based on VCard standard

Import/export functions

Support for GPG/PGP encryption

Threaded message listing

Plug-in API for flexible exensions

If you are looking for such a solution, I encourage you to try it. Better yet, if you have the skills to help, let them know.
